Residency

Pursue a Career in the Anglican Church.

New text for the top: The 3 Streams Institute Residency program is designed to form and train future senior leaders for the Anglican Church. Residency is built around the ordination process in the Diocese of the Rocky Mountains. In addition, residents take on significant leadership responsibilities in their work as well as learn about leadership through regular Seminars. The program is designed to build on the experiences of the internship and apprenticeship, deepening their spiritual formation and emotional health as they gain additional mentoring by experienced clergy.

How It Works

The Residency program is a two-year, full-time program. The residency requires 32+ hours of dedicated time per week (10 for learning, and 20-25 for pastoral work). Residents are expected to be at their church most days of the week and adopt a pastoral schedule, including days of rest.

The cohort experience of the apprenticeship morphs to being more a self-directed learning process, with weekly and monthly guidance from 3 Streams Institute staff, senior leadership at your church, and the Diocese of the Rocky Mountains. Residents benefit from a guided learning process, mentoring from experienced leaders, real-world job experience, and unique, in-person training on management and leadership.

Year 1 of the residency is focused on learning and leading. Residents study for ordination exams, participate in leadership seminars, and carry out self-directed, mentor-guided learning plans for pastoral development and spiritual formation & emotional health. Year 1 residents work at the church, expanding their leadership role within a department, and maintaining a deepening relationship with other residents. Residents also assist with limited aspects of the internship and apprenticeship.

Year 2 of the residency shifts its focus to sending. In the second year, residents complete ordination (either to the diaconate or priesthood) and focus their attention either in church planting or finding full-time leadership roles in the Anglican Church. The “lab” of Year 2 is their real ministry contexts, and 3 Streams Institute staff focuses their attention on helping the resident to land in a position of leadership during or after their residency experience.

My time at Wellspring served as an opportunity to build community, grow in leadership, and discern next steps in my pastoral journey. The supportive and encouraging leadership embodies generosity and a true heart to see the Kingdom grow. We were blessed in many ways through our time there.

Is this program right for you?

This program is for:

Self-motivated, mid-career or second-career professionals, or pastors interested in switching from another denomination to the Anglican tradition.

Seasoned ministry leaders seeking executive-level training for church planting within the Anglican denomination.

Individuals with a desire to seek ordination in the Anglican church who would also like to participate in an intensive holistic development program.

This program is NOT for:

Those who are early in their ministry career. (If this is you, check out our internships!)

Individuals who are primarily exploring careers outside an occupational ministry context. The residency prepares individuals for church leadership positions.

Those who are not interested in ordination in the Anglican Church in North America. Discernment for ordination to the diaconate or priesthood is a key part of the 3 Streams residency.

FAQs

Can I apply directly to the residency?

We suggest most people begin with the internship. However, we will occasionally accept candidates directly into the residency. The following are required for applicants directly into the residency:

  • Desire to pursue both ordination as well as a full-time leadership position in the Anglican church
  • Membership in an Anglican church for a year
  • Completion of the confirmation process
  • Fully committed to completing the residency program and the 32+ hour/week requirements of the residency
  • Have a context for pastoral ministry for their residency, either part-time or full-time at a local Anglican church

If you’re interested in directly applying to the residency, we strongly suggest you reach out 6-12 months before the application deadline of February 15.

Is the residency a paid role?

Residents choose one of the following pathways for financially supporting their work in the residency:

  • Fundraise to support their full salary needs (this training is provided in the internship). Wellspring will match the first $10,000, and will pay an additional $8,000/yr in either tuition benefit or taxable stipend.
  • Secure a PT or FT pastoral role at Wellspring or a partner church in the Diocese of the Rocky Mountains.
  • Have another source of funding to support your 32+ hour/week commitment to the residency
  • Combine a PT role and fundraising to fund your full salary needs.
